Build a readable resume for online applications
By Nepocore · Published · Updated
Applicant tracking systems differ. A template cannot promise to pass every system, and a keyword score cannot tell you whether an employer will interview you. Your practical goal is a document that is easy for both a person and a text-processing system to read.
Follow the employer’s instructions first
If the application requests a particular file type, use it. A PDF is not automatically preferable to a document format the employer explicitly requests. Check file-size limits and whether a separate form requires the same information.
Keep a clear reading order
A straightforward document with a name, contact details and recognizable sections is easier to inspect. Use headings such as Experience, Education and Skills. Avoid replacing essential words with icons. Put your role and company together so the relationship is clear.
Use actual text
A photo of a resume can look clear while providing no selectable text. Nepocore’s direct PDF exporter writes text into the document. Open the result, select a paragraph and paste it into a plain-text editor to check whether the reading sequence makes sense. Browser PDF exports should also be checked with your own content.
Use the job description honestly
If an employer asks for project management and you have managed a project, describe that work using the relevant language. Do not paste a hidden block of keywords or list technologies you have not used. Evidence in context is more useful than a repeated term.
Understand what a match score means
Nepocore’s Job match compares selected terms in the pasted description with your profile, skills, experience and project descriptions. It is a local keyword overlap calculation. It does not connect to an employer’s ATS, assess your eligibility or predict an application outcome.
Check the exported file
- Search for your name and an important skill in the PDF.
- Check that a long role or company name has not broken the layout.
- Confirm that dates remain associated with the correct role.
- Open your links and proofread the exact final version.
Choose The Classic or Minimal for a straightforward starting point. Your relevant experience and the employer’s actual requirements still matter more than a label on a template.
