How to write a resume when you have little experience
By Nepocore · Published · Updated
A first resume can feel like a demand for experience you have not had the chance to earn. Start by changing the question: what evidence can you offer that you can learn, contribute and follow through? Coursework, a personal project, volunteering and a part-time job can all provide useful answers.
Start with the opportunity
Read the job description before choosing what to include. List the practical requirements: communicating with customers, using spreadsheets, writing clearly or working with a team. Then find an honest example for each requirement you can demonstrate. You do not need a matching example for everything.
Give education the right space
If education is your most relevant recent experience, place it above work history. Include your qualification, institution and dates. Add a small selection of relevant modules or a substantial project. Listing every class makes it harder to see what matters.
Describe a project like a contribution
Explain what you built or investigated, your own responsibility and what happened. “Created a responsive booking prototype and tested it with five classmates” gives a reader more information than “Excellent design skills.” Use that sentence only if it describes work you actually completed.
Use a simple structure
- Name, contact information and a relevant headline.
- A short profile connecting your current strengths to the opportunity.
- Education and selected projects.
- Work, volunteering or other practical experience.
- Specific skills you can discuss or demonstrate.
Keep the profile grounded
“Recent management graduate with practical experience building spreadsheet budgets and coordinating a student event” is an informative opening if accurate. Follow it with a clear direction. Avoid claiming to be an expert because a template asks for a confident introduction.
Make the final check
Check your email address, dates and links. Read the PDF on a phone and a larger screen. If a line sounds impressive but you cannot explain it in an interview, rewrite it. Your first resume needs to make an honest connection, not imitate a senior career.
In Nepocore Resume, add projects under More sections and move Education above Experience in the Section organiser. Start with The Minimal or The Classic.
