A period outside paid employment is part of a work history, not a reason to invent a job. Your resume can give a clear timeline and useful context while leaving sensitive personal information private. How much explanation helps depends on the application.
Use dates you can support
Keep role dates consistent across the resume and application forms. Do not extend an old job to cover a later gap. Use the same date style throughout. If an application specifically asks for a complete history, follow its instructions rather than treating the resume as a substitute.
Choose a brief explanation when it adds clarity
A neutral entry such as “Career break” with dates can explain a substantial period. You may add a short, accurate description of caregiving, study, travel or another activity if you want to. A resume does not need to narrate every personal circumstance.
Keep private details out of the document
Do not add diagnoses, another person’s medical history or detailed family information just to make a gap understandable. A broad description can be enough. This guide is about document clarity, not legal disclosure obligations; check the actual application requirements for your situation.
Show recent evidence when you have it
A relevant project, completed course or volunteer activity can help show current capability. Explain what you did and when. Keep it separate from paid employment so the reader can distinguish the context.
Make the timeline readable
The Timeline template can help organise dated entries. Review the work-experience guide and check the final PDF for accurate dates. Use your cover letter for a short transition explanation only when it contributes to the application.
