Tailoring means selecting and explaining the experience that answers an employer’s needs. Keep the facts stable while changing emphasis, ordering and detail. A tailored application should be easier to understand, not fuller of repeated keywords.
Separate requirements from background information
Read the whole advertisement and note required qualifications, essential tasks and useful extras. Include submission instructions in the checklist. If a requirement is unclear, do not assume a keyword score can resolve it. Eligibility and the employer’s decision are separate from wording.
Map each important requirement to evidence
Use three columns in your own notes: requirement, evidence and location in the resume. Mark genuine gaps rather than filling them with claims. A requirement for customer reporting could connect to a weekly support summary you prepared, even if your old job title was different.
Change order before adding length
Move a relevant project, skill or recent role higher. Shorten unrelated details. Rewrite the summary after the supporting sections are ready. A career-change application may benefit from a hybrid structure, while a straightforward progression can use reverse chronology.
Review terminology without stuffing
Use the term in the advertisement when it truthfully describes your work. The local keyword comparison can highlight overlap, but it does not connect to the employer or predict an ATS result. Ignore suggestions that would misrepresent your experience.
Save and inspect the right version
Duplicate the document in My documents before changing it for another role. Give the version a clear title and export a matching file. Before submitting, check the employer name, recipient, links, file type and any copied text. Keep a private JSON backup of the master.
